"Free 5G government phones" usually means a 5G-capable phone offered free by a Lifeline provider to customers who qualify for Lifeline. The government doesn't supply phones. Lifeline only discounts monthly service, and each provider decides which devices, if any, it offers.
How Lifeline works
Lifeline lowers the cost of phone or internet service by up to $9.25 a month (up to $34.25 on Tribal lands). It's limited to one benefit per household and requires annual recertification.
Maximum monthly discount applied to a qualifying service plan, not a cash payment.

Who may qualify
You may qualify through SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, Federal Public Housing Assistance or the Veterans Pension, or with income at or below 135% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. See eligibility.
Why a free 5G phone isn't guaranteed
- Provider choice: some providers offer only basic phones, which may be 4G.
- Inventory: models change with stock, sometimes at enrollment time.
- State: offers and plans differ by state.
- Coverage: a 5G phone only uses 5G where the network has 5G coverage.
