Lifeline Recertification

To keep your Lifeline discount, you must confirm every year that your household is still eligible. Here's how it works and how to avoid losing your service.

Updated September 2026 · Reviewed by the Combo Wireless editorial team

Recertification is the yearly check that you still qualify for Lifeline. It's required by FCC rules for every subscriber, including Combo Wireless customers. Missing it is one of the most common reasons people lose their benefit.

How recertification works

  1. Automatic check first. When possible, your continued eligibility is confirmed automatically using state or federal program databases. If that works, you may not need to do anything.
  2. Notice if action is needed. If it can't be confirmed automatically, you'll receive a notice asking you to recertify.
  3. Respond before the deadline. Federal rules give subscribers 60 days from the notice to recertify. Follow the instructions in your notice, which may include online, mail or phone options.
  4. Provide proof if asked. You may need a current benefit or income document.

If you don't recertify in time, you'll be removed from Lifeline. Your discounted service will end. Watch your mail, email and texts around the anniversary of your enrollment.

California LifeLine renewals are different

In California, renewals are handled by the California LifeLine Administrator, not the National Verifier. You'll receive a renewal form from the Administrator, typically with a PIN to renew online or by phone. Follow the form's instructions and deadline carefully. Our California LifeLine guide explains more.

Recertification checklist

  • Keep your mailing address, email and phone number up to date with us.
  • Save a copy of your current benefit letter (SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, etc.).
  • If your qualifying program ended, check whether you qualify through income or another program.
  • Keep using your line. The usage rule applies year-round.
Lifeline non-usage timeline
  1. 1
    30 days with no usage

Using your line at least once in 30 days (a call, text or data session) keeps it active.

  2. 2
    15-day notice

Your provider must notify you and give you 15 days to use the service.

  3. 3
    Use it or lose it

If the line is still unused after the notice period, the Lifeline benefit is removed.

What happens to my devices?

Recertification concerns your Lifeline service eligibility. Device terms are covered in our terms of service. Keeping your eligibility current keeps your service active.

Changes during the year

You don't have to wait for recertification to report changes. You must tell us within 30 days if your household no longer qualifies or if someone else in your household already receives Lifeline. If you move, update your address within 30 days. Email support@combowireless.com.
