iPad 9th Gen (refurbished)

A "free government iPad" isn't something a government agency hands out. Lifeline, the federal program behind most free-device offers, discounts phone or internet service; it doesn't pay for iPads. Combo Wireless offers a free refurbished iPad as part of a device combo when you qualify for Lifeline and enroll in our service.

Our recommendation

Choose the iPad 9th Gen if it's available. Its A13 Bionic chip is noticeably faster, its 12MP ultra wide front camera with Center Stage keeps you framed on video calls, and it supports newer iPadOS versions. The iPad 7th Gen is still capable for browsing, video and reading, but it doesn't run the newest iPadOS releases, so some new apps may not support it over time.

Both use a Lightning connector, both have Touch ID, and both support the 1st-generation Apple Pencil and Apple's Smart Keyboard (accessories sold separately).

How your iPad gets online

The iPad connects over Wi-Fi. When you're out, join your phone's hotspot. With an iPhone, the iPad can use Instant Hotspot straight from its Wi-Fi menu. Hotspot use draws from your plan's data allowance.
