If you get SNAP benefits on an EBT card, you likely qualify for Lifeline, the federal program that discounts phone and internet service. Once you're approved and enroll with Combo Wireless, you can choose a device combo that includes a free refurbished tablet.
What "free tablet with EBT" really means
There are two common misunderstandings behind this search:
You can't buy a tablet with EBT funds
SNAP benefits are for eligible food items only. They can't be spent on electronics.
SNAP doesn't hand out tablets
Neither SNAP nor Lifeline provides devices. Lifeline discounts monthly service.
What is true: SNAP participation is one of the qualifying programs for Lifeline. Your EBT card shows you're in SNAP, which makes you eligible for Lifeline service. Combo Wireless then offers a free tablet in a device combo to eligible customers who enroll.
The path from EBT card to free tablet
- Confirm you receive SNAP. Anyone in your household receiving SNAP counts. See qualifying with SNAP.
- Choose a combo with a tablet. The phone & tablet, iPhone & tablet, tablet & laptop and tablet & iPad combos all include the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9.
- Apply online. Select SNAP as your qualifying program on our application.
- Verification. SNAP participation is often confirmed automatically through state databases. If it can't be, you'll be asked for a document.
- Get your devices. Your tablet and second device ship with free standard shipping after approval.
Your state's EBT card
SNAP has different names and cards in each state we serve. Any of these counts:
| State | SNAP program name | EBT card |
|---|---|---|
| California | CalFresh | Golden State Advantage EBT card |
| New York | SNAP | Common Benefit Identification Card (CBIC) |
| Texas | SNAP | Lone Star Card |
| Florida | SNAP (Food Assistance) | Florida EBT card |
WIC is different. WIC benefits are also loaded on EBT cards, but WIC is not a federal Lifeline qualifying program. In California, WIC does qualify for California LifeLine. See the differences.
What proof do I need?
The EBT card by itself usually isn't accepted as proof, because it doesn't show a current eligibility date. If verification asks for a document, use a SNAP approval or benefit letter that shows your name, the program name, the issuing agency and a date within the last 12 months. Qualifying through a program is an alternative to qualifying by income.
