U.S. rules generally let you keep your phone number when you change wireless carriers in the same area. Your new carrier requests the number from your old carrier, and once the port completes, your number works on your new line.
What you need
Your phone number
The number you want to keep.
Account number
From your current carrier. It's often different from your phone number.
Transfer PIN
A number transfer PIN or passcode. Many carriers let you create one in their app or by calling.
Also have the account holder's name and the billing address exactly as your current carrier has them.
Step-by-step
- Don't cancel your current service. Canceling first can release your number.
- Get your account number and transfer PIN from your current carrier.
- Apply with Combo Wireless and choose to keep your number.
- Activate your new line with your Combo Wireless SIM or eSIM when instructed.
- Test it. Make a call and send a text. Your old service ends automatically when the port completes.
Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Port rejected: wrong account number or PIN | Confirm both with your old carrier and resubmit |
| Name or address mismatch | Use the exact name and billing address on your old account |
| Number has an unpaid balance or is inactive | Contact your old carrier; a canceled number may not be portable |
| Prepaid account with no PIN | Ask your carrier how to create a transfer PIN |
Switching and Lifeline
If your old service was Lifeline, porting your number goes hand in hand with transferring your benefit. See how to transfer your Lifeline benefit. Eligible customers who switch get a free phone.
Number porting FAQs
How long does porting take?
Wireless-to-wireless ports often complete within a day, but it can take longer if details don't match.
Can I keep a landline number?
Sometimes. Landline-to-wireless ports depend on the number and location. Email support@combowireless.com to ask.
Will my contacts and texts move too?
Porting moves your number only. Back up your contacts and photos to your Google or Apple account before switching phones.
